First Nations, First Contact, First Fleet

Year 4 Incursion

On Wednesday the 16th of October, the Grade 4’s attended an incursion called First Nations, First Contact, First Fleet. The drama and history presentation regaled us with information about Australia’s past, while the presenter sang us ballads and songs written by convicts, indigenous people and first settlers. Here are what some of the children thought:

I learnt that an indigenous leader was captured by the British. He was a shapeshifter and he escaped from them twice. When the got him the third time they chopped off his head.

Rydah, 4 Porritt

I liked the incursion. When Captain James Cook landed at one of the beaches it was sacred land. The indigenous man snapped off the top of his spear to show they would not fight.

Ruby, 4 Porritt

I liked how interesting the incursion was and how I learnt about aboriginal culture before the white settlers came to Australia.

Joseph, 4 Fahey

I liked the songs that he played because he was using instruments. Learning about William Buckley and what the British did to him was very interesting. I also enjoyed looking at the historical pictures of Maps and Indigenous figures.

Vivaan, 4 Colley

I thought that the European settlement was very interesting. I enjoyed singing along and learning the Indigenous songs. William Buckley’s story of leaving the Convicts and living with the Aboriginal people was very interesting.

Dhiya, 4 Colley

I have learnt that there is much more human dignity in Australia compared to when the European settlers first happened. At the excursion Yarn told us about the different relationships aboriginal people had like the trading contact with the Massaman people of Asia as well as William Buckly’s “second life”. I still wonder how they communicate with the different aboriginal people even thought they all spoke different languages.

Sneha, 4 Fernandes

I know that all Aboriginal people should be treated like equals. We need to listen to them because they protected Australia all these years. He told us how some Aboriginal people caught their food, their histories and their lifestyles.

Zayde, 4 Fernandes

I liked learning about the history of Australia and our Indigenous people. I liked how Jan shared pictures for us all to see of Indigenous Australians and the white settlers.

Leora, 4 Fahey
