Immigration Museum Excursion

Year 5

As part of the Year 5 Inquiry topic students travelled into the city to visit the Immigration Museum. We explored different stories of people who had migrated here to Australia and all the reasons why they chose Australia as their home. Students were mesmerised by the interview room where they listened to mock interviews and the reasons people wanted to stay in Australia. They were able to accept or reject their application to stay based on the information provided. Some of the students were able to see the immigration timeline bridge that has been recently constructed in Melbourne. It is a historical timeline of immigration here in Australia, it showcases how many years the First Nations people have been here in comparison to first settlers and the beginning of colonisation.

Overall, we acquired so much knowledge about Australia’s migration history, which we will continue to refer to throughout the term for our Inquiry topic.
