Melbourne City

Year 4 Excursion

On Friday, 22nd of November, the grade 4’s participated in an excursion by Melbourne Guided Tours. The focus for the day was learning about the Australian Indigenous and European explorers who discovered Australia.

We began at Federation Square where we discovered the ground stonework had been exported from the Kimberley’s. The student’s learnt about the eucalyptus tree and the medicinal practises used by the indigenous community and they had the opportunity to crush the leaves to smell the aroma. We then made our way down to Birrarung Marr and heard how the river was used. Students tried ‘pig’s face’ a plant that has water inside that was used to hydrate the indigenous and tasted a form of spinach plant. Next we continued on down the river to several sites where we learnt about the historical importance. Students launched pinecones into the water to see if they were ‘sinkers or floaters’ that had been used for fishing in the past.

Although the day was very hot, the students were engaged and made many connections to what they had been learning in the class.
