Structured Literacy

At St Anthony’s

Literacy Learning at St Anthony’s has evolved over the past 12 months to ensure our school follows the Victorian State Curriculum and the MACS Vision for Instruction.  Each day your child/children experience a variety of structured literacy experiences.  Your child’s literacy block will involve the following components;

Years F – 2

  • Phonemic Awareness – the sounding out of words
  • Phonics – the spelling of words based on the sounds we hear
  • Fluency – repeated reading of a instructional text – at level
  • Reading – reading and responding to a rich text
  • Handwriting – practising Victorian Modern Cursive
  • Writing – sentence level writing strategies

Years 3 – 6

  • Fluency – repeated reading of a instructional text – at level, or based on the inquiry topic
  • Morphology – the understandings of how words are created
  • Vocabulary – often linked to inquiry
  • Reading & Novel Studies – responding to a variety of texts
  • Handwriting – practising Victorian Modern Cursive
  • Writing – sentence and paragraph level writing
