Student Achievement

Congratulations

Last week Derek from Year 6 represented our school in the State Primary Track & Field Championships in the 100m and 200m sprint. To qualify for this event Derek came first and was undefeated in the 100m and 200m at school level, District Level, Divisional Level, and Regional Level. On the day he had won both of his heats which qualified him for the finals. Derek then won both the 100m and 200m final, crowning him the state champion for his age group.

Last week at assembly Derek participated in a Q&A with Mr Romios.

Q: How did you feel right before the race started? Were you nervous, excited, or a combination of both?
A: Before the race started I was nervous because everyone looked really fast, but I was excited to represent my school.

Q: What was going through your mind during the race itself?
A: To make my family and friends proud of my result and try my hardest to win.

Q: Were there any unexpected challenges or obstacles during the race? How did you overcome them?
A: Fixing my start time in my run, so I tried observing other contestants and how they started and changed it to my liking so I could win my race.

Q: How did you feel when you crossed the finish line?
A: When I crossed the finish line, I was shocked because it was still hard to believe that I won, as that is a big achievement and joyful because I know my family and friends would be proud of me.

Q: How did it feel representing your school at such a high level of competition?
A: Pretty good because it puts the school out there and inspires other students to do their best and also be role model to others so they can use me as a source of hope to chase their dreams.

Q: After being crowned the fastest boy in Victoria in under 12s for the 100m and 200m sprint, is athletics something you want to pursue to become the next Usain Bolt?
A: Yes, athletics is something I definitely want to pursue. A dream would be to compete in the Olympics and become the next Usain Bolt.
